Celebrating One of the UK’s Safest Drivers – Matthew Smithers
August 2025
We are proud to announce that EBB’s driver Matthew Smithers has been recognised as one of Samsara’s Verified Safest Drivers for 2025 – a prestigious new recognition programme celebrating exceptional safety standards on the road.
Matthew joins a select group of professional drivers who have each driven more than 10,000 miles with one of the lowest safety event rates across Samsara’s extensive user base. This achievement reflects not only his skill and professionalism, but also his dedication to keeping himself, other road users, and our customers’ deliveries safe every single day.
A lifetime passion for the road
Matt has been with EBB for 12 years, but his passion for driving began long before that. As a boy, he loved going out in the lorry with his dad – also a professional driver – and he knew early on that he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps. Before joining EBB, Matt already knew of us from the deliveries we made into his previous company.
Today, that same enthusiasm is evident every time he gets behind the wheel. A big car enthusiast and a supporter of Lewis Hamilton in
Formula 1, Matt simply loves everything that happens on the road. He’s often in work early to clean his lorry, making sure it looks its best, and has even personalised it with his own lights.
A professional who takes safety seriously
As a night time trunker driver, Matt regularly deals with road closures and the challenges of navigating in an articulated lorry. He always checks routes in advance to ensure safe and smooth journeys. He’s not shy about saying that Samsara’s in-vehicle technology hasplayed an important role in helping him maintain his high safety standards.
For Matt, being recognised as one of the safest drivers isn’t just about individual effort:
“It’s a team achievement. I couldn’t have done it without the wonderful people I work with.”
His approach to driving is rooted in vigilance – always scanning the road ahead for potential hazards and making sure he’s prepared for whatever’s around the corner.
Life beyond the wheel
Away from work, Matt is a dedicated family man who loves spending time with his partner and children. Fridays might be his least favourite day due to the heavier traffic, but at the end of the week, home is where he loves to be.
Recognising a true professional
During National Truck Driver Appreciation Week, we value and celebrate all our drivers — but Matt, you really are outstanding.
Everyone at EBB is proud of your achievement. Your professionalism, passion for the job, and dedication to safety set an example for us all.
Congratulations Matt - you've set the standard for safe, consistent, and professional driving.
