Race to The South Pole

Picture
November 2011
On 14 December, EBB Operations Director Matt Elliott will be starting his journey to Antarctica in order to take part in one of the most extreme races on the planet, a race to The South Pole. The race is being run to commemorate the centenary of the infamous race between Scott and Amundsen. Antarctica is the largest, highest, driest and coldest desert in the world - more people have been into space than walked to The South Pole. Matt will be in Antarctica for about 6 weeks (over Christmas and New Year) as he skis approximately 900km to The South Pole, pulling over 70kg behind him in temperatures dropping to -50°C.

Matt will be racing for Team EBB Paper and is hoping to reach The South Pole ahead of some strong international competition. So why is he doing this? As well as the obvious personal challenge, and the opportunity to experience one of the most remote places on the planet, Matt is raising funds for two charities: The Alzheimer's Society and The Royal British Legion. Matt's Grandfather, and founder of modern EBB, John Elliott sadly passed away with dementia earlier this year, whilst his other Grandfather is actively involved with The Royal British Legion.

More information on the event can be found on his websitewww.southpolerace2012.co.uk. On this website you can track his "live" progress during the event, as well as listen to daily audio diaries and hear how his mental state slowly deteriorates as exhaustion, hunger and the extreme climate start to affect him and his team mate in Team EBB Paper! It is also possible to make a donation to his chosen charities from this website.
