Significant Improvements and Investments at Umka Cardboard Mill
August 2024
Umka Cardboard Mill is a producer of recycled white lined chipboard (GD2, GD3 and GT2) for EBB-stocked products such as Umka Color, and Umka Liner as well as Umka Special.
Over the past few years the mill has invested heavily in new state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment and technology to create efficient and sustainable processes with a significant increase in overall production volumes and where a wider range of grammages can be produced. The mill planned these improvements over 4 years (2020-2024) investing around €130 million in upgrades to the existing production technology meaning daily production capacity will be around 620 tonnes, up from pre-investment level of 320 tonnes per day. Improvements mean consistency of quality and supply for these high performing products.
As the improvement schedule comes to an end, this summer the final stage will be achieved with a complete reconstruction of the coating dryer section. The existing three air dryers and three IR dryers with open flames will be replaced by seven brand new OptiDry Coat air dryers, produced by Valmet. This will improve the coating dryer system and increase production capacity from 190,000 tonnes to 220,000 tonnes (substance range 160g – 450g).
The investment programme has also seen the following improvements over the past 4 years:
The main partner and supplier for the new equipment is Finnish company, Valmet. Valmet is the leading global developer and supplier of process technologies, automation and services for the pulp, paper and energy industries.
This independent, privately-owned mill has a long history dating back to it’s establishment in 1939, with it becoming a member of the Kappa Star Group (largest waste paper collector in the region) in 2003. With a firm emphasis on self-sufficiency, it has created it’s own network of waste collection centres, it’s own wooden pallet production facility and has a logistics facility as part of the group. The mill is located in the heart of Europe, in Serbia with excellent transport links.
Umka Cardboard Mill holds FSC® certification, as well as ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certifications and has successfully participated in the UNIDO Cleaner Production Programme. All products hold ISEGA certifications for their suitability for food packaging.
EBB has invested in a huge stock range in two of the Umka grades ensuring consistency of supply for our customers across the UK and Ireland as well as an enviable choice of sizes and grammages. In a world where packaging is increasingly moving away from plastic, we are committed to providing high quality alternatives that meet our customers demands.
